Calvin Borel Rachel Alexandra Horse Racing Hand Signed 11x14 Photograph 2009 Preakness Stakes Color
On May 16, 2009 Borel won the Preakness Stakes on Rachel Alexandra (after that horse was sold following the Derby). This accomplishment marked the first time that a jockey won the first two legs of the Triple Crown on different horses, and Borel could have become the first jockey since Steve Cauthen to win the Triple Crown in 1978 with a win in the Belmont. A win would have made him only the second individual to win the Triple Crown by sweeping the races in a year with different horses (D. Wayne Lukas, a trainer, in 1995). However, on June 6th, 2009, Calvin Borel finished 3rd on Mine That Bird in the Belmont Stakes, failing to accomplish a Jockey Triple Crown.

Jean Cruguet Seattle Slew Horse Racing Hand Signed 11x14 Photograph Kentucky Derby Triple Crown Winner 1977 Color
In 1976 Jean Cruguet rode the two-year-old colt Seattle Slew to victory in the Champagne Stakes. The following year he achieved racing immortality aboard Seattle Slew. They won the Wood Memorial Stakes and the Flamingo Stakes enroute to winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes, thereby capturing the prestigious Triple Crown. In a move still written about today, with 20 yards to go to the finish line in the Belmont Stakes, Cruguet stood up in the stirrups, raised his right arm over his head, and jubilantly gave the crowd a victory salute by waving his whip in the air.

Steve Cauthen Affirmed Horse Racing Hand Signed 11x14 Photograph Kentucky Derby Triple Crown Winner 1978 Color
Nicknamed 'Stevie Wonder' and 'The Million Dollar Man', Cauthen set an American earnings record of $6 million while still an apprentice. He had grown up in Kentucky's horse country, the son of a trainer and a farrier, so it was only natural that he choose a career in racing. After he became a pro rider at age 16, Cauthen's rise to prominence was meteoric. Today we remember Cauthen as the most recent winner of the Triple Crown series. In 1978 he rode Affirmed to victory in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, a series won by only 9 other jockeys. Cauthen still considers the Belmont stretch battle between Affirmed and Alydar a highlight of his career.
